Introducing: Careers Advice for Writers

Well, hi. I’m Jess, I’m a writers and a careers advisor…

…and over the past couple of weeks I’ve taken it upon myself to yap some careers advice for writers into the abyss that is TikTok.

This is partly because, much like everyone else in the known universe, I’ve been trying to figure out what I’m even supposed to, or qualified to, say on social media.

I have a whole series of scripts planned about social media for writers, so I’m not going to litigate that here, but yeah, that’s where this has come from.

And the decision I made? Well, careers advice geared towards writers, of course!

I’ve got ideas to cover a wide range of topics - writing courses, portfolio careers, handling criticism, planning for the future - all with a focus on being a professional writer of - probably - fiction, considering that’s what I sort of know about.

I’ve also decided to collate the topics here, with links to each video for people who don’t habitually use TikTok, and also the written scripts for people who prefer blog posts.

Look, I don’t know everything. I’m not claiming to be a total expert on all aspects of an author’s career - it’s only been a real part of my career for two years and a single book deal, so I’m not here to act like some kind of prophet of all things books.

The thing is, I also don’t know what it’s like to be an IP lawyer, but I’ve still managed to help a not-insignificant number of students get jobs in that field. Careers advice, often, is careers advice, and I would like to share some of it with people.

So, my new page Careers Advice for Writers will have some of these topics available for your perusal, and if you’d like to suggest a topic for future, you can do that via the contact form too!
