Line by line…

I’m getting ready to send my line edits back.

A pile of open books, pages facing up. Light and shadow fall across the pages.

I haven’t blogged as much about this round of edits, and it’s for no particular reason other than that it’s not been as big of a task as the developmental edits were.

There were a couple of suggestions I didn’t agree with, but all I had to do was present a different solution and the editorial team were really supportive.

Otherwise, it was a case of going through the comments and tracked changes, agreeing with the ones that were easy to agree with, and spending a little bit of brain-power each with the others.

Then I printed off the full draft and I’ve just read through it all as a hard copy, with a red pen and a black pen for me to make corrections and comments for my own benefit.

Tomorrow, I’m planning to input those corrections into the e-version of the draft, and then I’ll send that back to my editor.

A black painted door with a printed sign that reads be optimistic.

I don’t know exactly how to feel about it — I remember feeling like this last time, too.

I know I’ve put good work into it, and made a real effort to improve the story based on my editorial feedback, but I won’t know how successful I’ve been until someone else has looked at it.

Thankfully I think we’re all in good time at the moment, so if there’s anything I’ve missed, or something the team want me to re-look at, I’ll have time to do that.

I feel really lucky, you know? I’ve found this editorial process reasonably painless, and I’ve been able to see all the way through how the editorial notes will help improve my story.

But I’m definitely getting ready to be done with edits soon, I hope — if only because it brings things a step closer to being real!
